Plus, a special musical collaboration by Ironband and the unsung heroes…the Carnies!

Thank you Ironman 70.3 Kansas for having Ironband at the race again this year! In particular we’d like to thank Ryan and his crew for their hospitality as well as all of the athletes and spectators for all the smiles, thumbs up, and cheers!

And, of course, a big congratulations to everyone who toed the line on Sunday; the heat and wind made for some pretty brutal conditions so great job by all of you who managed to cross the finish line under those conditions!

The band may have come home with sunburns, a warped guitar case or two, and sweat-covered guitar strings so we feel your pain. As always, however, the effort is worth the fun that we have being out there to help support you on the course.

We did experienced a couple of firsts this year; one little boy came up to me to tell me that “Ironband rocks” and a five-year-old girl came up and requested, “Not Tonight Honey, I’ve Got a 20-Miler in the Morning.”

Now I’m not sure whether to be flattered or concerned that these young children are Ironband super-fans. Either way, we appreciate their support and that of their parents for providing a good laugh.

No sunscreen for the band?

The other first for us was spending a night camping with the unsung heroes of the Ironman circuit. I’m talking about those hard-working, resilient, generally un-flappable, yet somewhat disturbed, men and women who defy normal sleep patterns and travel the world setting up fencing, tents, cones, course markings, buoys, aid stations, and more. Then they tear it all down after the race is over and move on to the next race before you even realized that they were there. Among the inner-circle they are known simply as…the Carnies.

The entire band signed an iron-clad confidentiality agreement in order to gain access to the inner-sanctum of the Carnies, and so as much as I’d love to regale you with lively tales of their exploits at races here and abroad, unfortunately I am sworn to secrecy. In fact, given the plethora of food and beverage being passed around, I’m not sure that I can remember most of what was revealed to us over the course of our time with the Carnies.

Fortunately for you, the Carnies are a creative bunch and in the days leading up to the race I received an email with lyrics for a cover song aptly titled, “Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Carnies” that gave me a small glimpse into the lifestyle of the not-so-mythical Carny. With these lyrics came a request to play the song in the campground on Saturday evening. Four chords? Easy enough on short notice.

However, as you may know we have a weakness for challenges that span musical genres from which we would otherwise steer clear. So, with less than 48 hours until we had to depart for Lawrence, we grabbed our guitars and jumped into the studio and emerged 42 and half minutes later with a mastered CD.

We’re no Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, but even if you don’t understand or relate to the Carny lifestyle I think you’ll enjoy the tune so check out the links above to view the music/video montage or to download the song for eternal enjoyment on your preferred electronic music device. And how about a round of applause for Ryan Robinson and Tommy “Kansas” for their work in authoring the lyrics!

Congratulations again to everyone for great races in Lawrence on Sunday. Too many people to call out or results to list here, but visit for more details and full race results.

We’ll see you out on the course or a stage near you soon!
