Ironman Kansas 70.3
Countdown is on for inaugural Ironman 70.3 series race in Lawrence
We’re getting down the wire for the inaugural Ironman Kansas 70.3 series race that will take place on Sunday, June 15th, at Clinton State Park in Lawrence, KS. Your race directors have been working extremely hard to put on an incredible event that showcases one of the most challenging course in the North American 70.3 series and highlights the best that Lawrence has to offer visitors from around the country.
We’ve received emails from friends and customers around the country who are descending on Lawrence for the big event and they all ask the same thing, “It’s Kansas, so it’s a flat bike course, right?” Well, yes, this is Kansas, and yes, the occasional scientific journal has labeled Kansas as being as “flat as a pancake”. But throw a pancake under the microscope and you’ll see that even a pancake isn’t flat at all.
The same can be said of the challenging bike course in the hills near Clinton Lake in Lawrence. Dubbed the “Iron-Cross” by local bikers, the IMKS bike course covers a rolling series of ups and downs around the lake and out into the Kansas countryside that is anything-but-flat. In short, bring your climbing legs. The run course offers a bit of a reprieve after the bike by taking runners along a picturesque trail system and roads in and around the lake and campgrounds of Clinton State Park. The campgrounds are usually full this time of year so the runners will have plenty of ad-hoc spectators along the course.
Athletes and their families will also have the opportunity to experience the beautiful town of Lawrence, Kansas, home of the 2008 NCAA Basketball Champions, the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Downtown Lawrence will play host to the Expo and packet pickup starting on Friday and the evening’s festivities will be capped off by a concert by the always-entertaining Chicago band, Poi Dog Pondering. And who can forget about the Navy SEAL Accelerator Tour; not only will they be on hand at the Expo, the Navy Leap Frog team will actually be sky-diving into the start of the race during the National Anthem!
World MultiSport will be on hand during the Expo on Friday, so stop by and say hi after you check-in and we’ll update you on the latest news on our race wheels, frames, GPS gear, and nutrition products. WMS is also helping to bring you shuttle service from the transition area out to the “Iron-Cross” area so your family and friends can catch all the action on the bike course. Last but not least, we’ll all be racing on Sunday so swing by and say hi in transition before the race starts!
Volunteers are still needed, so if you’re interested in seeing a Half-Ironman race from close up please visit the website for instructions on how to register as a volunteer! Also, if you haven’t registered for the race itself yet, do so soon before it sells out!
