Heeeeee’s baaaaaack…Lance returns to triathlon – Ironman and LIVESTRONG partner to raise money for cancer victims

In February the World Triathlon Corporation and Lance Armstrong announced a partnership between the LIVESTRONG Foundation and Ironman intended to raise over $1M for people affected by cancer.

While many around the world wondered why a retired professional cyclist would want to tackle an Ironman triathlon, most triathletes simply said, “Lance is back!

What many people don’t realize is that Lance Armstrong did his first triathlon at the age of 13 and by the age of 16 he was a top contender in the sport of triathlon before eschewing the swim and run and becoming a pro cyclist.

While Ironman-distance triathlon may be a new challenge for Lance, triathlon is really a return to his roots and the fact that he’s leveraging that return to help raise money for cancer victims through the LIVESTRONG Foundation should be newsworthy by itself. Of course, we are talking about Lance here, so the simple goal of doing a triathlon and raising over a million dollars wasn’t quite enough.

No, Lance kicked off his year of triathlon by heading to Panama to compete in the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Panama race and and quickly dispelled any doubts about his triathlon chops by laying down an amazing race, nearly taking first place until being passed in the final miles by two-time Olympic medalist, Bevan Docherty.

LIVESTRONGNonetheless, there is no doubt that some impressive performances will come out of Lance and Team LIVESTRONG’s triathlon appearances this year so stay tuned. The current schedule for Team Livestrong calls for stops at a few Ironman 70.3 races as well as a a return to Lance’s old Tour stomping grounds to compete in Ironman France before, if all goes well, heading to Kona for the Ironman World Championship in October.

We wish Lance success in his triathlon racing career and we wish Ironman and LIVESTRONG success in their efforts to raise much-needed funds for those affected by cancer.

And you never know….Ironband has been spending some time in the studios lately so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a new song may come out of this that might make for the perfect opening track at the post-race party in Kona. I’m just sayin’.
