Battle in the Tropics: Ironman 70.3 St. Croix

Ironman 70.3 St. CroixThe reports are coming in from last week’s Ironman 70.3 St. Croix and as always the athletes and spectators continue to rate this event at the top of their list of must-do destination triathlons.

Of course, if you don’t like heat, hills, rain, wind, conch fritters, or pina coladas, it may not be your cup of Chamois Butt’r, but for the rest of us it’s certainly a race that I’d put on my bucket list.

Buckets, incidentally, are what was coming down in the form of rain in the days leading up to the race. The weather on St. Croix is always a challenge and when paired up with the climbs on the bike leg this race is among the most challenging 70.3 races on the planet.

But buckets of rain begat buckets of endurance and fortitude and despite a number of crashes and flats it was a stellar day of racing with Angela Naeth setting a new course record and Andy Potts chasing down Lance Armstrong to take the titles in St. Croix.

Team Armstrong continued to draw large crowds of spectators and once again Lance proved that he’s a real contender on the 70.3 circuit so we wish him and the LIVESTRONG/IRONMAN partnership the best throughout the rest of the 2012 season.

Congratulations to all the finishers, and a special congratulations to long-time Ironband Friend and triathlete Steve Richards of Wichita, KS, who took seventh in his age group in St. Croix – way to go Steve!
